The Top 5 Emerging AI Threats for Executive Protection

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant technology that security professionals can afford to watch from the sidelines. It is becoming part of the threat environment itself.

A recent EP Wired poll asked executive protection professionals a straightforward question: Has AI become a major executive protection concern?

The response was clear. 75% said “Yes, already is,” while the remaining 25% selected “Not yet, but soon.” Every respondent identified AI as an issue that belongs on the executive protection radar, even if they differ on how urgently it needs to be addressed.

However, that raises a more specific question: What are the most significant emerging AI threats for executive protection?

1. AI-Enabled Impersonation and Deepfakes

Deepfakes are perhaps the most visible AI-related security concern. Manipulated video, synthetic audio, and AI-generated images can create convincing representations of real people, including executives, family members, colleagues, and security personnel.

For an EP team, the concern is not necessarily whether someone can create a perfect fake video of a principal. The more practical issue is whether manipulated content could be convincing enough to influence a decision.

Consider a seemingly authentic voice message asking an employee to transfer funds, release information, or change a travel arrangement. Or a fabricated video that appears to show an executive making a particular statement. The attack does not need to survive forensic examination indefinitely. It may only need to appear legitimate long enough for someone to act.

AI-enabled impersonation can also affect physical security. An attacker may attempt to imitate a principal, a member of the protection team, a driver, a household employee, or a trusted corporate contact. If that identity is accepted without verification, the consequences could include unauthorized access, disrupted movements, compromised locations, or unsafe changes to a protective plan.

This introduces another layer to the concept of verification.

Protective teams have traditionally verified identities, locations, vehicles, credentials, and communications. Increasingly, they may also need to consider whether the communication itself can be trusted.

2. Personalized Social Engineering at Scale

Social engineering has always been a concern for executives and their teams. What changes with artificial intelligence is the potential scale, speed, and level of personalization.

An attacker can gather information about a principal from publicly available sources, including professional profiles, social media, company websites, news coverage, and leaked data. Artificial intelligence can then help organize that information and generate highly tailored communications.

A generic phishing email is relatively easy to identify. A message that references a recent meeting, a known colleague, an upcoming trip, or a family event can be much more convincing.

Artificial intelligence can also help attackers maintain longer, more credible conversations. Instead of sending one poorly written message, they may generate a sequence of communications that adapts to the target’s responses and reinforces the appearance of legitimacy. 

For executive protection, this means the principal may not be the only person who needs protection from digitally enabled manipulation. Assistants, family members, drivers, household staff, and corporate personnel can all become potential entry points.

The physical security of a principal can therefore depend, at least in part, on the digital awareness of the people around them.

3. Automated Intelligence Gathering and Exposure Mapping

Information exposure has always been an important consideration in close protection. Social media posts, corporate announcements, property records, photographs, travel information, and public filings can all contribute to a picture of a principal’s routines and movements.

Artificial intelligence changes the equation because it can process and connect information at a scale that would be difficult to replicate manually.

A single piece of information may appear harmless. Several seemingly unrelated pieces of information can tell a very different story when brought together.

AI tools can help identify relationships between locations, people, schedules, business activities, family members, and online accounts. They may also help identify patterns that reveal where a principal lives, works, travels, exercises, socializes, or spends time with family.

This makes information management and exposure assessment increasingly relevant to protective intelligence. The question is no longer simply what a principal has publicly shared. It is also what someone could potentially determine by combining the information that is already available.

For EP professionals, that fortifies the importance of understanding the principal’s digital footprint as part of the wider risk picture. It also highlights the need to assess the exposure of people and organizations connected to the principal, not just the principal’s own accounts.

4. AI-Generated Misinformation and Crisis Manipulation

Artificial intelligence can make it easier to create and distribute false information during a developing security incident.

Fabricated reports, synthetic images, manipulated videos, and false social media posts can create confusion around a principal’s location, movements, health, business activities, or public statements. In a fast-moving situation, even temporary uncertainty can complicate decision-making.

An attacker may use false information to trigger an unnecessary response, divert protective resources, create public panic, or influence how a team interprets an emerging threat. They may also attempt to conceal a real incident by flooding the information environment with competing narratives.

This creates a challenge for protective intelligence teams, which must distinguish between credible reporting, unverified claims, manipulated content, and deliberate deception.

What’s more, the risk is not limited to public crises. False information may also be used privately, such as through a message claiming that a venue has changed, a route is blocked, a meeting has been canceled, or a member of the team has issued a new instruction.

In these situations, the speed of the response matters, but so does the reliability of the information. A fast decision based on false information can be more dangerous than a slower decision based on verified information.

That is why clear communication protocols, trusted sources, and established confirmation procedures are becoming increasingly important.

5. AI as a Threat Multiplier

AI does not necessarily create an entirely new category of threat every time it is used. In many cases, its significance comes from how it strengthens threats that already exist.

Researching a principal, creating convincing communications, analyzing publicly available information, developing a social-engineering pretext, and coordinating activity have all been possible for years. AI can make these activities considerably easier and faster.

That matters because executive protection often depends on identifying unusual behavior before it develops into a physical security incident. If a potential adversary can use artificial intelligence to conduct research, create convincing identities, or communicate with a target at scale, some of the warning signs may become harder to recognize.

The technology can effectively act as a threat multiplier, increasing the capabilities of individuals who may previously have lacked the time, technical knowledge, or resources to carry out sophisticated operations.

AI may also lower the barrier to entry for hostile actors. A person with limited expertise could use widely available tools to produce more credible messages, analyze a target’s online presence, or automate repeated attempts to engage with people in the principal’s network.

For EP professionals, this means existing threat categories may need to be reassessed. Harassment, stalking, fraud, insider targeting, cyber-enabled intrusion, and hostile surveillance can all become more effective when supported by artificial intelligence.

Why These Threats Matter to Physical Security

Although many AI-enabled threats begin in the digital environment, their consequences can become physical.

A manipulated message may alter a travel plan. A false identity may gain access to a residence or event. A social-engineering campaign may expose a family member’s routine. A fabricated report may cause a team to redirect resources at the wrong moment.

Executive protection operates across physical, digital, personal, corporate, and reputational risk. AI can connect those areas quickly, allowing a digital deception to influence real-world movement, access, and decision-making.

This is why artificial intelligence can’t be treated solely as a cybersecurity issue anymore.

The protective question is not simply if a piece of content is authentic. It is whether the information could affect the safety of the principal, the team, or the wider protective operation.

What Should EP Professionals Be Doing?

The answer is unlikely to be that every executive protection professional needs to become an artificial intelligence engineer.

What is becoming increasingly important is AI literacy.

Protectors should understand, at a practical level, how AI can be used to manipulate information, imitate identities, automate social engineering, generate misinformation, and accelerate intelligence gathering. They should also understand the defensive tools available to their teams and the limitations of those tools.

This knowledge can then be incorporated into existing protective processes rather than treated as an entirely separate discipline.

Threat assessments, advance work, intelligence collection, travel planning, communications procedures, principal education, and family security can all consider AI-enabled risks where appropriate.

The goal is not to treat every unusual email, video, or online interaction as an AI attack. It is to ensure that artificial intelligence is included in the threat model when the circumstances warrant it.

The Human Element Still Matters

Technology changes. The fundamentals of executive protection do not.

Situational awareness, communication, advance work, intelligence, planning, relationship management, and sound decision-making remain essential. In fact, the growing use of artificial intelligence may make those human skills even more important.

AI can generate information, but professionals still have to determine what deserves attention. It can identify patterns, but people have to understand the context. It can create convincing content, but security teams can build procedures that make deception more difficult.

That means that the challenge for the industry is not simply learning about AI. It is learning where AI fits into an already complex protective environment.
